Clean Slate is the grumpy old pony on the left, and his cutie mark is a feather duster. Before Celestia started killing off unicorns he was married to one named Little Sun, who was a kindhearted mare that worked as a school teacher. After she was executed, he became cold to everyone except for their daughter, Wishful Note. He moved his family as far away as possible, sticking to a small town where he raised his infant daughter. Clean Slate believes he's too old to fight anything, not to mention he doesn't want his daughter taken away from him, so he tries to keep both of them away from any rebellious ponies or those who wish to rise up. He works as a janitor/maid and lives on the ground with his daughter.

Wishful Note is a calm and friendly mare, who enjoys meeting and talking to other ponies in order to see everyone's opinions. She takes a particular interest in those who knew unicorns in the old days, and is always curious over what their abilities were and such. However, she's often scolded by her father for her curiosity, him saying that it could get her in trouble one day. She doesn't pay attention to him. Wishful Note is, as her name indicates, a very talented singer and musician. She's often found singing or playing wishful love songs or solemn hymns to entertain her neighbors or just to herself on a hill near her home. Despite her father warning her against such things, she often finds herself making or singing ballads against Celestia, and though she never knew her mother herself, she wishes revenge for having her torn from her life.
[EDIT] Her cutie mark is a dark blue quarter note that has lines coming from it, like bleeding ink.
